Did you know that cars and other vehicles run on LPG as alternative to dirty and expensive gasoline and diesel? Vehicles do run on LPG. Driving an LPG vehicle is safe, easy and best of all, much cheaper than unleaded gasoline or diesel. Recent independent tests, conducted in UK, have also shown that out of the three fuels, LPG is the best environmental alternative. What is involved in an LPG conversion? LPG conversion kit results in a bi-fuel car, i.e. one that can run on either LPG or gasoline. A second independent fuel system is added to the car, for which a dedicated tank is needed. You can change from one fuel to another at the flick of a switch on the dashboard, without having to slow down or turn off the ignition. Does it matter what LPG system is installed in my car? It certainly does. The system used depends on the vehicle being converted; an older carburetor vehicle will have a different system to a modern fuel-injected vehicle with a catalytic converter. Built into the changeover switch is a LED gauge that indicates how much LPG is left in the tank. Can I overfill the tank? LPG tank cannot be overfilled because it is fitted with automatic shut-off valve that shuts automatically when it reaches 80% of fuel capacity. Economic Benefits Your fleet can save a minimum 20% off your fuel bill. LPG retails 8 pesos less than gasoline or diesel. If you have 50 cars consuming 20 liters a day, it can save you at least 20% or P2 million pesos per year (computed using current petroleum prices). Return of Investment computation A fleet of 50 cars need P1.5M to convert to LPG (P30,000 each). This investment can be recouped in 9 months if 50 cars consume 20 liters a day. It means 26,000 liters per month or P858,000. If you use LPG it only means P686,000 per month or a difference of P171,000 per month. P1,544,400 if multiplied by 9 months. LPG is better for your engine LPG has a simple chemical make-up, means its clean burning and it is already in gaseous form when it enters the combustion cylinder, it burns more efficiently than gasoline or diesel since it has a Research Octane Rating of about 110 much higher than 95-97 of premium gasoline. Because of clean and efficient fuel burn, fewer carbon deposits build up on your car so it will run smoother and last longer. Is LPG safe? LPG is renowned for its excellent safety record where storage, transport and use are concerned. As a vehicle fuel, LPG is as safe, if not safer, than gasoline and on at par with diesel. In Vienna Austria, all buses run on LPG; in 30 years of operation there has never once been an incident caused by the use of LPG. More major manufacturers are producing LPG vehicles including Ford, Daihatsu, Fiat, Mercedes, Nissan, Proton and Vauxhall because of its viability as alternative to gasoline and diesel fed vehicles. Worldwide Success of LPG There are now over 9 million LPG vehicles in operation worldwide. Korea leads the field with over 1.7 million, Poland 1 million, Turkey 1 million, Australia 550,000 (98% of taxis are LPG powered) and UK 117,000. How does LPG benefit the environment? Compared with gasoline; vehicles running on LPG emits 20% less Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Compared with diesel; one diesel car is equivalent to 20 LPG vehicles with regards to Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions, and 120 LPG vehicles with regards to particles.
